This CCDS representation uses the most likely start codon based on currently available transcript evidence from mouse and other homologs. However, it should be noted that two other potential upstream start codons exist, both of which are conserved and have strong Kozak signals. The use of these start codons would result in a protein that is 37 aa or 30 aa longer at the N-terminus, respectively. The 5'-most start codon has no transcript support in any species, while only one mouse mRNA, AK165725.1, extends far enough to include the second start codon, which occurs very close to the 5' end. If the transcription start site is at or around this region, the ribosome may not be able to initiate translation there. Alternatively, the region is very GC-rich, so it is also possible that cloning difficulties, e.g., reverse transcriptase pausing, did not allow the true transcription start site to be identified. Due to uncertainty about the location of both the transcription and translation initiation sites, the third start codon is therefore represented based on currently available evidence.
