  • delta 6 fatty acid desaturase, membrane bound, di-iron oxidoreductase, containing three 'histidine box' motifs and a cytochrome b5 fusion domain. Similar to metazoan delta 6 desaturases. Involved in the biosynthesis of eicosapentaenoic and docasahexaenoic acids. When expressed in yeast, mediates the desaturation of exogenous free fatty acids. Probably prefers endogenous acyl-lipids as substrates.
