The nrfD gene encodes a transmembrane protein that is part of the nitrite reductase reaction and it may transfer electrons from the quinone pool to the c-type cytochromes or it may be an adapter that enables formate dehydrogenase H to transfer electrons into an electrogenic electron-transfer chain.
