Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the association of HLA-DRB1*1501 polymorphism with the susceptibility to severe chronic periodontitis (CP) in Chinese Han nationality.

Methods: DNA samples were collected with buccal swabs from 134 subjects with severe chronic periodontitis and 81 periodontal healthy control. HLA-DRB1*1501 genotype was determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The genotype distribution was statistically analyzed by chi2 test.

Results: The allele frequencies of DRB1*1501 was detected more frequently in severe CP patients than in the controls [OR=3.874 (2.401-6.252), P<0.05]. The 1501/1501 genotype frequencies were significantly increased in patients compared with the reference population [OR=20.896 (4.866-89.726), P<0.05].

Conclusion: The results suggest that HLA-DRB1*1501 allele may be a risk indicator for the susceptibility to severe CP in Han nationality (P<0.05). The HLA-DRB1*1501 homozygote genotype was associated significantly with severe CP (P<0.05).
