Roles Classification
Biological Role(s): sympatholytic agent
Any compound which inhibits the postganglionic functioning of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).
non-narcotic analgesic
A drug that has principally analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory actions. Non-narcotic analgesics do not bind to opioid receptors.
alpha-adrenergic agonist
An agent that selectively binds to and activates alpha-adrenergic receptors.
Application(s): sympatholytic agent
Any compound which inhibits the postganglionic functioning of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).
antihypertensive agent
Any drug used in the treatment of acute or chronic vascular hypertension regardless of pharmacological mechanism.
non-narcotic analgesic
A drug that has principally analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory actions. Non-narcotic analgesics do not bind to opioid receptors.
alpha-adrenergic agonist

General Comment
2011-08-01 Clonidine is an α2-adrenergic agonist that can cross the blood-brain barrier and act in the hypothalamus to induce a decrease in blood pressure. It is used (generally as the monohydrochloride) in the management of hypertension, although other drugs with fewer side effects are normally preferred. It is also used for the treatment of migraine, and as an adjunct treatment in the management of severe cancer pain that is not relieved by opiate analgesics alone.
