Siberian chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus), a ground-dwelling squirrel species naturally distributed in north-eastern Eurasia from western Russia to northern Mongolia, Korea, the Kuril Islands, and Japan, is a predominant food scatter- hoarder that stores their food both in small scattered caches and underground hoards. Unlike the larder-hoarding animals, Siberian chipmunks rely on accurate spatial memory and olfaction to relocated the cached food. Here we provide a genome level sequence assembly to illustrate the genetic differences in spatial memory and olfaction between scatter- and larder-hoarding animals.
