It is also considered as a model organism for investigating the climate change and fishing impacts on the Indian ocean resources. S. longiceps is also a rich source of PUFA and cheap source of protein for the millions especially in developing countries like India. Genomic information in this species is vital to understand adaptive variation and selection patterns in pelagic fishes in view of the changing climate in the Indian ocean.
