A mode of inheritance that is observed for traits related to a gene encoded on one of the autosomes (i.e., the human chromosomes 1-22) in which a trait manifests in individuals with two pathogenic alleles, either homozygotes (two copies of the same mutant allele) or compound heterozygotes (whereby each copy of a gene has a distinct mutant allele).

Definition

A rare inherited bone marrow failure syndrome with manifestation of an isolated and severe decrease in the number of platelets and megakaryocytes during the first years of life that develops into bone marrow failure with pancytopenia later in childhood. The exact prevalence is unknown and less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature. The inheritance pattern is autosomal recessive. [from SNOMEDCT_US]
